Reference Point Therapy

08.31.09

Reference Point Therapy (RPT) is an emotional healing technique which specializes in the rapid release of trauma.  What differentiates RPT from the many other emotional healing techniques is that RPT applies recent scientific research to really “get to the bottom” of the client’s problems, whereas in our view most emotional techniques fail to do so.

The evidence for this claim is in the success rate of the technique, which is 95-100% for the release of extreme emotional trauma such as the trauma of sexual abuse.  The technique is extremely effective as a complementary therapy in the treatment of physical problems. For instance chronic back and neck pain which does not respond to massage or physiotherapy alone can in most cases be healed by the complementary treatment of RPT and massage or physiotherapy.  This would be most relevant in situations where the pain has an underlying emotional course or pattern, or where there are emotions or patterns blocking the healing process (ie where there is “secondary gain”).  RPT is extremely effective in clearing these emotional causes and secondary gain.

RPT is based on the developing science of pre-natal psychology.  Though RPT is based on the founders’ research, Simon and Evette Rose, much of the underlying science is derived from the recent work of the Institute of Peak States.  Their research has been published in the recent books, Peak States volume 1 and Peak States volume 2, written by Grant McFetridge et al.  These books draw on previously unpublished PhD research on pre-natal trauma, in particular a model of “key developmental events”.

In simple terms, there are key events, such as the moment of conception, which are most significant in our development.  Trauma at these key points is more significant than trauma at any other point in our development. Healing trauma at these points creates profound changes and enables us to get “to the bottom” of physical and emotional pain which otherwise fails to respond to treatment.

The Peak States material is aimed at an audience of psychologists and counselors.  The RPT course is based on the same scientific research but taught in a way that is accessible to all healing practitioners, particularly massage therapists, naturopaths, homeopaths, kinesiologists or counselors (including graduates of Neuro Linguistic Programming or similar techniques).  Experience has shown that people in these professions, such as massage therapists, will encounter clients whose physical pain will not shift because of deep emotional trauma.  RPT teaches the practitioner how to clear this trauma in a gentle and effective way.

RPT is a complementary therapy and does not replace medical treatment or physical therapy such as massage.  The integration of emotional trauma release such as RPT with massage and Allopathic medicine is part of the course.

Practitioners, including massage therapists, who have taken RPT courses before (principally in the founders’ home country of Australia), have consistently reported significantly better results with their clients through integrating RPT with their other work. One of the board members of Healing That Works,  the RPT certifying authority in Australia, is Adani Tyler, a naturopath with massage experience who now uses RPT to great effect with perhaps 40-50% of her massage and naturopathy clients.  (Testimonials from her and other massage therapists available on request.)

Level 1

In the first level, the healing practitioner is introduced to the concept of cellular trauma.  We explore how trauma, particularly pre-natal trauma, precedes our beliefs, injuries, pain and other worries.  Indeed these conscious complaints are simply manifestations of underlying trauma.  In this course we teach the use of basic regression techniques (based loosely on Neuro-linguistic programming, and refined to apply to pre-natal trauma).

The approach at the beginner level is to start with a problem, such as “grief” or “shoulder pain” and trace it back to underlying trauma, particularly inherited trauma.

Level 2 (two days)

The level 2 course is designed to teach faster and more intuitive approaches to clearing trauma. It is not based on regression techniques.

Drawing on the research presented in the Peak States model of pre-natal trauma, we identify 10 or more specific key developments events.  These include the moment of conception, the fertilization of the egg, implantation of the egg into the uterus, birth and the cutting of the umbilical cord.  Each of these is a key developmental event because trauma at these moments is magnified.

Put simply, there are hundreds if not thousands of “little” traumas that we all experience as part of being human.  It is not possible to clear every trauma. Fortunately it is not necessary to seek and clear every trauma in human experience because it is trauma at certain key developmental events that defines our existence.  Simply put, most trauma is of little consequence, but the clearing of trauma at 10 key developmental points can significantly change a person’s life.  This has been scientifically established by research initiated by the Institute of Peak States and followed and applied by the founders of RPT.  Research results indicate that clearing key development events results in a greatly improved quality of life, including reduction in physical and emotional pain, and achievement of much higher spiritual states of consciousness.

The Level 2 course is practitioner training, meaning that all graduates are certified to practice the work on their clients. Given the fantastic  success rates achieved in this work, this will be an amazing boost to anyone who has, or wishes to have, a healing practice.

Continuing Education

Continue Education credit is available for licensed massage therapists and bodyworkers.  One day level 1 is 8 hours, two day level 1 is 16 hours, and level 2 is 16 hours. The courses are combination of theory, demonstration and direct practice with other students in the class.
